Obituary

Earl Amos Childress, 78, of Bakersfield, California, passed away after a life marked by service, dedication, and deep love for his family. Born on August 19, 1947, in Lake Providence, Louisiana, Earl was the beloved elder son of Albertine Childress and James Washington. Through this union, they were also blessed with a younger son, Alvin Childress a.k.a Bede, all which preceded him in death.

Earl received his early education at Saint Barbara Catholic School and later graduated from Soldan High School. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his country, completing four years in the United States Army and earning an honorable discharge. His commitment to community continued as he later worked for the City of St. Louis.

In 1972, Earl married Jackie Hayes, and to this union were born two children: Dr. LaTongia Spencer and Bishop Earl Andre Childress, II. He also kept a close connection to his extended siblings — Harry, Jean, and Gwen.

In 1978, Earl relocated to Bakersfield, California, where he would reside for the remainder of his life. There, he built a long and meaningful career as a firefighter and later as a hotel caterer until his retirement. His work ethic, resilience, and steady presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Earl shared a special and enduring bond with his close friends whom he considered as brothers, Jerome Gregory, preceded in death, and Eugene Hubbard. He carried a special love in his heart for his little cousin Alissa Bryant. Their relationships were marked by mutual respect, loyalty, and genuine affection, filled with good times, shared laughter, and memories that will be treasured forever.

Earl leaves to cherish his memory his children, LaTongia (Darnell) and Earl (Nicole); his stepdaughters, Yvette (Cliff), Elaine, Delores, and Chante. His beloved grandchildren, Kearstin, DeShawn, Daria, Earl III, Antonio, Caleb, Darla, Sherrod, Dylan, Kyle, and Stevenson; and his cousin, Alissa (“Pumpkin”); good friends, Lola, Melvin Thomas, along with a host of extended family members and friends in California and Louisiana who will forever remember his strength, humor, and unwavering love.

Earl Amos Childress lived a life of purpose, service, and devotion. His legacy continues in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
