Jeanette Claudean Hollins was born on July 13, 1945, in Delhi, Louisiana, to Geraldine and Bethel Carter. She spent her childhood in Saint Louis, where she attended elementary, middle, and high school in the Ville neighborhood. A proud graduate of Sumner High School, Class of 1963, it was there that she met her high school sweetheart, Gerard W. Hollins, who would later become her husband and lifelong partner.
Jeanette went on to pursue higher education on a full academic scholarship at Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. On June 14, 1969, she and Gerard were united in marriage, a bond blessed with the birth of their son, Gerard Jr., in 1973. Jeanette and Gerard shared more than 54 years of love and devotion until his passing in 2023.
Jeanette dedicated her professional life to serving the children and families of St. Louis. For over 35 years, from 1968 to 2005, she worked as a social worker in the St. Louis Public School District. She touched the lives of students across every grade level, including a meaningful return to her alma mater, Sumner High School. Known for her gentle but steady guidance, her gift for listening, and her unwavering advocacy, Jeanette was a steadfast champion for students navigating both academic and personal challenges. She also mentored younger social workers and worked alongside educators to create supportive, inclusive school communities.
Her impact extended far beyond the classroom. Jeanette was a woman of warmth, generosity, and quiet strength. She cultivated lifelong friendships, valued her community, and gave of herself freely. She was a proud and active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Jeanette will be remembered for her kindness, integrity, and the immeasurable difference she made in the lives of countless children, families, and colleagues. Though she has gone home to be with the Lord, her legacy of compassion and service will continue to live on.
On the morning of September 11, 2025, God called Jeanette home. She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted son, Gerard W. Hollins, Jr.; her loving sister, BethAnn Thomas (Flim); her loving brother, Derek Carter; her devoted grandson, Matthew Hollins; special nieces Leslie Thomas Washington (Kirk), Michelle Hollins Dixon (LaRae); and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends.
