Mary Louise Green, lovingly known as “The Matriarch,” was born on June 3, 1936, in Pass Christian, Mississippi. She was raised by her aunt, Sarah Labatte. Her husband, Hughie Lee Green; sons, Hughie Lee Jr. and William Hall; grandson, Kevin Lee Harrison; and sisters-in-law, Ann, Ella, and Lily preceded her in death.
Mary was a devoted Catholic, wife, mother, grandmother, and nurse. She raised seven children and four grandchildren, all while sustaining a career as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital for over 20 years. Upon retiring, Mary devoted all of her time and love to her family. She was The Glue—the most present, the most giving, and always full of love. She was there for anyone who needed her. She often expressed her joy at witnessing the births of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She raised her family in the church, first at St. Phillip Neri (now St. Simon of Cyrene), and later at her final church home, Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was also a proud member of the St. Peter Claver Women’s Organization.
Mary did everything with love, class, and a whole lot of style. Coming from humble beginnings, she took joy in the finer things and loved to shop. A true “jazzy lady,” she often went to the mall simply to people-watch and enjoy the day. A southern girl at heart, she loved to cook—never afraid to try any cuisine, but Gumbo was always her favorite. She also enjoyed traveling, mystery shows and novels, and her beloved soap operas.
The impression she left on her family and friends will be felt for years to come.
She leaves to cherish her memory: children, Vanessa, James, Anthony, Gerald, and Paul; grandchildren, Assejul, Kris, Gerald, Samuel, and Zachary; and great-grandchildren, DaVon, Trevelle, Damia, Damoni, Gerald Jr., Amayer Christine, Gericho, Gerimiah, Bianda, Arianna, Layla Rose, and Ayla.
She will always be loved tremendously, missed beyond measure, and celebrated beyond eternity.
