In Loving Memory of Melba J. Smith

Melba J. Smith, born on February 26, 1936, to Turlie and Grace (Fulton) Hart. She lived a life filled with love, service, and unwavering devotion to her family and community. Raised by the Black Oblate Sisters of Providence at St. Frances Girls Home, Melba developed a strong foundation of faith that guided her throughout her life.

She was a devoted mother to three sons—Terrence Hart, Delanor (Nadine) Wilson, and Craig Turner — and a cherished grandmother to three grandsons, four great-grandsons, and one great-granddaughter. Her large extended family, including many nieces and nephews, brought her great joy. Among them, her grandson Troy Edmond and her nephew Simeon Thomas, stood by her side as her constant companions in her later years.

Melba was preceded in death by her beloved son Terrence, her parents, two sisters, and two brothers. She accepted Christ at an early age, a faith that remained steadfast throughout her life.

Education was an important part of Melba’s journey. She graduated from DeAndrea High School and earned a certificate as a Doctor’s Assistant. Later, she pursued additional education at Florissant Valley Community College, earning a certificate in early childhood education. Her passion for nurturing young minds led her to open an infant and toddler program at St. Nicholas. Eventually, she started her own business and became the most renowned nanny in St. Louis County, a title earned through years of dedication and care.

Her generous spirit extended beyond her career. She devoted herself to many organizations and tirelessly volunteered for Community Woman Against Hardship, receiving numerous awards and recognitions for her service.

In the final chapter of her life, she found a deep connection with her "earth angels" — Jennah, Bill, Will, and Parrish Purk. She became their night nanny in 2011, and from the moment they met, they became family. Melba loved them dearly and thanked God for them every day. She guided Jennah with wisdom, making sure she was always taken care of, encouraging her to expect respect from others, and, most importantly, teaching her how to make her famous banana pudding.

Melba J. Smith’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and dedication. Her impact on those who knew her will never fade, and her legacy will continue through the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of her family and friends.

Rest in peace, Tutu. You were a guiding light to so many.
